Awarded to Airmen who are forced to deploy in support of the Army. These deployments --- called "in-lieu-of" taskings -- are typically Army jobs that the Army cannot fill. Imagine spending several months in a room full of monkeys. Now imagine those monkeys are wearing camouflage trousers and carrying loaded weapons. Now imagine that many of these monkeys out rank you. Now you know what an "in-lieu-of" tasking is.

Awarded to any Airman who spent more than four months at any deployed location, even if they never carried or fired a weapon or "engaged" the enemy. Simply being there -- and not at home where we know you would much rather be -- makes you cool in our book.
